In the dynamic world of sports and
physical activity, the ACL ligament stands as a silent guardian, ensuring the
stability and functionality of the knee joint during every jump, turn or move.
Even though ACL ligament is this crucial, nobody talks about the health and
care of this important part of our body. Let’s learn about ACL more.
What is an ACL?
The Anterior
Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is a crucial structure in the knee joint. Here are
the key points you need to know:
· The ACL
is one of the four main Ligaments in the knee. It provides stability and helps
prevent excessive forward movement of the Tibia (Shinbone) to femur
(Thighbone).
· Located
inside the knee joint and crosses diagonally from the back of the femur to the
front of the tibia.
· ACL plays an important role in maintaining knee stability.
Functions of ACL:
· It prevents displacement of knee bones.
· It doesn't work alone. It collaborates with other ligaments, such as the Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL). They together create a balanced system that maintains stability in the knee joint.
Common Injuries:
· Sport injuries are so common in ACL injuries.
· Get hit very hard on the side of your knee, such as during a football tackle.
· Overextending your knee joint.
· ACL injuries include sudden stops, changes in direction, and direct blows to the knee.
·
A "Popping"
sound at the time of injury.
·
Obvious knee swelling
within 6 hours of injury.
·
Pain, especially when you
try to put weight on the injured leg.
·
Difficulty in continuing
with your sport.
First Aid and Pre-Hospital
Treatment:
·
Raising your leg above the
level of the heart.
·
Putting Ice on the knee.
·
Pain relievers, such as
nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen).
·
Consult an orthopedic
doctor Immediately.
Prevention:
·
Do not move your knee if
you have had a serious injury.
·
use a splint to keep the
knee straight until you see a doctor.
·
Do not return to play or
other activities until you have been treated.
1.Diagnosis:
·
Physical
examination to assess swelling and tenderness.
·
Imaging
tests such as X-ray and MRI to evaluate the ACL.
·
Objective
tests like laximetry
and pivot-shift test.
2.Conservative Treatment:
- Physical therapy and rehabilitation exercises.
- Self-care: P.R.I.C.E. therapy (Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation).
- Include collagen-rich foods and essential vitamins in your diet.
3.Surgical Treatment:
- ACL reconstruction if needed for daily activities.
- Arthroscopic Surgery that way no Scars are made.
